One of these is inflammation of the gums due to the presence of bacterial plaque which then spreads to the underlying tissues (periodontitis). Here the bacteria destroy the supporting apparatus of the tooth, including bone, and if action is not taken there is also the risk of tooth loss.

Another cause of bone loss is the extraction itself, especially if you wait too long to replace the missing tooth.
When dental bone regeneration is necessary

Dental bone regeneration is necessary in several cases. Below are the most common ones:

– In the case of dental implants, artificial roots inserted into the bone that serve as a support for fixed prostheses. If there is not enough bone, they cannot be inserted. Adequate bone volume is therefore essential to ensure the stability of dental implants.

– In case of periodontitis that causes bone destruction. After eliminating the infection, dental bone regeneration can improve the stability of existing teeth.

– In case sinus lift is needed to compensate for the lack of bone in the back of the jawbone.

Types of bone for dental bone regeneration

Two types of bone can be used to perform dental bone regeneration:

– autologous, i.e. bone taken from the patient;

– heterologous, that is bone not taken from the patient.

In the first case the bone is taken from the mandible or jaw, in some cases it is necessary to take it from the pelvis. In this case it is necessary to hospitalize the patient who must undergo general anesthesia.

In the second case, however, deproteinized bovine bone is used.

The use of heterologous bone is the most common because it avoids the inconvenience of surgery to take bone from the patient.

Dental bone regeneration techniques

To perform dental bone regeneration, a resorbable membrane or the patient’s own tissue is used, under which the bone filler material is inserted that will form the new bone tissue.

This bone material, as we have already mentioned, can be the patient’s own bone or external bone. In the case of external bone, one of the safest materials is Bio-Oss, bovine bone with no organic component, totally biocompatible.

If you have lost teeth and want to use dental implants, but do not have sufficient bone, or have lost bone due to periodontitis, please contact Studio Dr Schmitz. We will evaluate your bone situation by means of a digital orthopanoramic examination and then we will do our utmost to help you solve your problems.

Bone loss Bone loss can be due to several causes.
