Sometimes a dental implant cannot be used because there is not enough bone to support it. In reality, this lack of bone can be overcome with an advanced surgical technique: dental bone grafting (or bone regeneration). This technique consists in increasing bone by transplanting the patient’s own bone or by using external biocompatible bone.<\/p>\n
In the first case we talk about “autologous” dental bone grafting; here the bone is taken from the patient’s mandible and jaw, but it may also be necessary to take it outside the oral cavity, for example from the pelvis. In this case it is necessary a hospitalization of the patient who must be subjected to general anesthesia.<\/p>\n
In the second case we talk about “heterologous” dental bone grafting, that is bone not taken from the patient. The most used is the deproteinized bovine bone. The advantage of the latter is that it avoids the need for bone harvesting from the patient.<\/p>\n
There are several techniques to perform dental bone grafting, but the most common is the one that consists in applying a special membrane, under which insert the material that will form the new bone. The membrane, resorbable or non-resorbable, is inserted to protect the filling material placed underneath it, thus facilitating the maintenance of the clot in situ, the starting point for the formation of new bone.<\/p>\n
In the case of dental bone grafting with autologous bone, i.e. the patient’s own bone, the operation is very complex and requires two separate surgical procedures, while that made with external bone (bovine bone) is simpler but may involve poor blood supply to the bone. In the case of external bone, one of the safest and most reliable materials is Bio-Oss, a Swiss product, bovine bone deprived of the organic component, extremely biocompatible. Once irrigated by blood, it allows the formation of new natural bone in the patient.<\/p>\n
The insertion of a dental implant to replace a missing tooth requires a certain amount of bone. In several cases, bone may be missing and the causes may be natural or improper extractions. One of these is the extraction itself, which in fact, can cause pronounced bone resorption especially if a lot of time is allowed to pass.<\/p>\n
If the height of the alveolar ridge of the upper arch has been reduced, we resort to sinus lift, an operation performed under local anesthesia. This intervention determines an increase in bone volume in the upper jaw that allows the insertion of implants of adequate length and diameter. As bone volume is restored, the floor of the maxillary sinus is moved upward.<\/p>\n
